Within Christian circles is accepted the appellation "legalism." We understand it if we see it, couldn t possibly be accusable of it, but understand anyone who is. If apprenticed to ascertain it, the basal band acknowledgment is, "Not what we re doing."
What makes this chat so unthinkable? We can acknowledge to lies, cheating, stealing, adultery, gossiping, and more. But, no way could "we" anytime abatement casualty to legalism.
Perhaps we charge to feel above to anniversary other. Though, absolutely we re not claiming ahead over the abundant men of old!?! The Advocate Paul had abhorrent time advantageous legalism and wasn t too appreciative to accept it.
So, what is legalism (?) ... any custom, routine, obligation, service, regulation, or accomplishment performed to win God s accepting and favor. The Pharisees were abundant at it. Paul gave a simple definition. He alleged it "confidence in the flesh" and "having our own righteousness" (Ph. 3:4,9) ... as if there s annihilation we could possibly do to admeasurement up to God.
Acceptance by God (His actual love) cannot be earned. It was His allowance to us from the moment we accustomed Him into our affection (Ep. 1:6). It s already been given! Though, like any gift, it isn t ours until received.
However, if we wish God s accepting (approval) and all-powerful favor (blessings) in and as a aftereffect of our service, our works haveto be our allowance from the affection (II Co. 10:18, Ac. 10:35) ... as God can t be afflicted after the affection (I Sa. 16:7).
